Mentoring Program

The FPSS Foster Parent Support Services Society is interested in developing a Mentoring Program as a way of assisting and supporting new foster parents.

We are planning a pilot Project in the South Island Area, expanding to Central and Upper Island soon.

A Mentor is an experienced foster parent who can act as a trusted advisor, friend or support person and reduce the isolation they may experience as new foster parents.

The goals of mentoring are to increase the retention rate of foster homes, provide foster parents with a support network and information, and to help prevent placement breakdown.

The Functions Of A Mentor Are:

  1. to provide ongoing support, and one-on-one assistance to foster parents
  2. to assist in problem-solving, and answering questions about rules/standards/policy
  3. to provide information about and access to community resources
  4. to share experiences
  5. to refer to peer support meetings and ongoing, educational opportunities

Mentor Qualifications:

  1. at least 3 years experience as a foster parent
  2. hold a current MCFD contract
  3. good listening skills
  4. BC Foster Parent Education Program Certification or currently achieving certification
